Cricket

Just a quick one to congratulate England's cricketing hero's for a magnificent performance on Thur. Fri, Sat.  This mornings papers manage to mention it 4 or 5 pages in from the back! Once you get past whether Ashley is going to Chelsea or not, you find the cricket news.  Lets not underestimate what a great effort this was.  We (England) absolutely thumped Pakistan and i must say i thoroughly enjoyed watching it.  We are always quick to knock our sports stars when they are down but the equivalent amount of credit is not given when they perform like this.  Lets consider England football team winning 5-0 against Italy for example which would be similar to the cricket on Sat.  This would be massive news, huge! Now I'm not suggesting for one second that the Gentleman's game is bigger news than our football but when its only transfer talk, shouldn't the cricket be pushed to the back page?

You gotta love Monty by the way, Can't bat, can't catch, throws like a girl, but he can certainly bowl! The only man i have seen that receives the biggest cheer of the day for stopping the ball by the boundary - brilliant.

Anyway, that was my quick post.

Roy Hattersley

Having discussed and enjoyed the merits of Roy Hattersley last night with a friend of mine, i feel compelled to introduce him to those of you who are unaware of his special qualities.  Last nights 'discussion' was thoroughly entertaining and not something I will forget in a hurry.

So.... 

Roy Hattersley was a strong socialist and Labour supporter from his youth, electioneering for his local MP and city councilors from 1945. His mother became a city councilor and later was Lord mayor of Sheffield (1981). He won a scholarship to Sheffield City Grammar School and went from there to study at the university. Initially intending to read English at Leeds, he was diverted into reading economics when he was told it was necessary for a political career.

At university Roy Hattersley joined the Socialist Society (SocSoc) and was one of those responsible for changing it to the Labour Club and affiliating it with the isuy rather than the IUS. Hattersley became chairman of the new Club and later treasurer then chairman of the National Association of Labour Student Organisations. He also joined the executive of the IUSY

Tiger or Jack?

The question of who is the greatest golfer of all time will rage for the next 1000 years.  It is unlikely, in our lifetime, that a golfer will emerge to challenge the tiger or the bear. As with all sports, there is always debate on who is the best of all time.  Football - Pele or Maradona, Formula 1 - Senna or Schumacher, Tennis - Jeremy Bates or Federer.  So how do we judge who is the best?  The rapidly advancing technology available to sportsmen and women these days has surely played a major part in the success of the 'great' ones.  My problem with this? Everybody else is using it too.  Someone once said "you can only beat what is put in front of you" Never a truer word spoken. 

Big Jacks record of majors may or may not be surpassed by Mr Woods but my opinion, for what it is worth, is that Tiger has the edge on the big man simply because of the quantity of outstanding opponents that, week after week, are put in front of him.  Jack may have been great but he had a limited number of very good players to beat at any one time. Tiger on the other hands faces at least 10-15 blokes who 'could' win the tournament if they played to the best of their ability.

But then again, what do i know?

As reported by me on 28th Feb, Mr Ballack did in fact join Chelski as predicted. Does that make me some sort of knowledgeable Footy dude? or just someone that reads the Sun a lot?

World Cup fever

And so to the world cup. The greatest show on earth, a celebration of all things football and Englands big chance to win something....

Considering we are a nation who, up until 2 weeks ago,truly believed we had a decent chance, the best chance in years, to win the world cup, why do we constantly knock our boys at every opportunity? (You know who you are) We keep winning and we are still there, that is the main thing.  I couldnt give a flying wotsit if we played the worst football ever seen, worse then my old pub team on a drunken sunday morning, as long as we keep winning and indeed win the bloomin thing.  It only comes round every 4 years people, so why not break a habit and really get behind our heros. Positive thinking is everything.....and right now, its all we have.  Come on England.

BLOG OFF!

Having had it recently pointed out that my blog is boring I feel the need to defend it.

A blog is simply a way of expressing ones self and talking about whatever they feel the need to talk about.  Blogs shouldn't be a self obsessed ramble about Cheese and pickle sandwiches and how me me me is feeling today, should they?  That, unfortunately, is up to the individual concerned.

And so to football, hmmm not much going on today apart from the champions league draw that saw Mr Viera returning to Arsenal in his new colours of black and white - should be fun.

Michael Ballack

It would appear that the money tree that is Chelsea have moved swiftly to capture to diving talents of Michael Ballack.  This is, of course, speculation at this stage, but would not surprise me at all.  Why is it, when ever a talented footballer becomes available these days, Chelsea are straight in there with the money?  What exactly are they going to do with the numerous midfielders they have already?? Chelsea have adopted a 'buy him before anyone else does' attitude - purely to stifle any attempts the likes of Man u or Arsenal have of signing a player that would improve their team.  Can we not put a limit on the size of squads or something?  I know i know, this would be really hard to impose, but Chelsea are ruining the beautiful game with their bully boy techniques in the transfer market.  Remember Sean wright - whats his name??
